A fire broke out last night at Camp Small, Baltimore’s municipal wood waste collection center, prompting a rapid response from local firefighters.
The emergency unfolded around 5:10 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, when a diligent employee from the city’s parks department noticed flames and promptly called for help.
Firefighting Efforts
When firefighters arrived, they faced daunting challenges.
Strong winds fueled the fire’s intensity, leading to a swift spread among the large piles of wooden debris that filled the compact yard.
Occupying five acres in the Jones Falls Valley, just north of Cold Spring Lane, Camp Small serves as a vital processing and recycling center, where city workers and contractors deposit various wood materials, from logs to brush.
City Response
The fire drew significant attention from city officials, with Mayor Brandon M. Scott underscoring the team’s main objectives: to protect nearby areas and contain the blaze.
In total, the Baltimore City Fire Department dispatched 12 engine companies and deployed over 100 firefighters to manage the situation.
Additionally, heavy equipment from multiple agencies was brought in, and responders from both state and county levels joined the effort.
Current Status
Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries due to the fire.
Authorities confirmed that evacuations around the area were unnecessary at this time.
