HDI Global and Amwins Global Risks Announce Key Leadership Appointments

HDI Global appoints Dr. Carsten Schulte as Global Head of Marine, while Amwins Global Risks welcomes Gabriel Ewing to lead its new Transactional Risk practice.

In the latest industry news, two significant appointments have been announced at HDI Global and Amwins Global Risks, marking a shift in leadership that could reshape the future of their respective divisions.

Leadership Transition at HDI Global

Starting January 1, 2025, Dr. Carsten Schulte will take on the role of Global Head of Marine at HDI Global.

He transitions from heading the Technical & Strategic Services division, a position that will now be filled by Alexander Schlei.

Both leaders will report to Dr. Dirk Höring, a member of the Executive Board responsible for several key areas, including marine operations.

Dr. Schulte’s influence has been substantial over the last two years as he established the Technical & Strategic Services division.

His efforts have focused on promoting underwriting excellence and fostering efficient knowledge sharing among teams.

Before this, he had a hand in shaping HDI Global’s portfolio management strategy, showcasing his broad expertise.

With over 20 years of corporate insurance experience, Alexander Schlei steps into his new role after successfully leading the NatCat division within Technical & Strategic Services.

During his time there, he significantly improved the company’s ability to manage natural hazard risks.

Dr. Höring expressed excitement about Schlei joining the management team, praising his strategic vision and proven track record.

He also congratulated Dr. Schulte on his new responsibilities, predicting that his background would be instrumental in enhancing the Marine division’s growth.

Overview of Divisions

The Marine unit at HDI Global is charged with global underwriting operations, specializing in marine and cargo insurance for corporate and commercial clients worldwide.

This division works collaboratively with HDI Risk Consulting and claims teams to ensure clients receive exceptional coverage.

Conversely, the Technical & Strategic Services division is dedicated to supporting short-tail underwriting through detailed analysis, tools, and key performance indicators.

Its work spans coordinating portfolio management efforts, assessing natural risk accumulations, developing pricing strategies, optimizing underwriting workflows, and leading strategic initiatives.

New Addition at Amwins Global Risks

In a notable development elsewhere, Amwins Global Risks—part of the global specialty insurance brokerage Amwins, which ranks among London’s top independent wholesale brokers—has appointed Gabriel Ewing to spearhead its newly created Transactional Risk practice in London.

Ewing joins the Amwins team with nearly two decades of extensive experience in legal and M&A matters, specifically focusing on transactional risk insurance—a crucial element for today’s dealmakers.

His expertise includes warranty and indemnity insurance, as well as managing stand-alone tax and contingent liability risks.

His substantial background in international transactions and experience in emerging markets align perfectly with Amwins’ goals to broaden its reach.

Prior to his new role, Ewing was a director within the M&A, Transactional Risks team at Willis Towers Watson and served as a senior vice president at Marsh McLennan’s Private Equity and M&A Practice in London.

In addition to managing traditional transactional risk placements, Ewing will explore the development of newer segments within transactional risk, such as environmental and intellectual property insurance.

Nate Mathis, CEO of Amwins Global Risks, emphasized that Ewing’s deep knowledge and extensive experience would greatly bolster the firm’s capabilities.

He believes this strategic addition strengthens their offerings in the transactional risk arena and deepens existing client relationships across professional and financial lines.
