AccuWeather Forecasts Unpredictable Winter Temperatures and Snowfall Across the U.S.

AccuWeather forecasts fluctuating winter temperatures across the U.S. in December, with warm-ups in the East and above-average snowfall in several regions.

Meteorologists with expertise in long-range forecasting are warning of considerable temperature swings over the course of December, particularly following the frigid conditions that hit the Eastern United States at the month’s outset.

Temperature Changes Throughout December

December kicked off with a blast of Arctic air, plunging temperatures into a deep freeze across much of Eastern America.

In contrast, the West enjoyed milder and drier weather.

However, forecasters at AccuWeather anticipate a notable change around mid-month, predicting a warm-up for many regions in the eastern and central U.S. Alongside this rise in temperatures, some areas in the West can expect wetter weather characterized by both rain and mountain snow.

The Pacific Northwest, along with parts of Northern California, stands to benefit from significant rainfall and snowfall.

As the month moves forward, the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Midwest could also experience a drop in temperatures, but forecasters believe these colder spells will be less intense than the early December chill.

Extended Outlook for the Winter

According to AccuWeather’s extended outlook, the stormy weather patterns we often see at the year’s close are likely to carry into early 2025 across much of the western U.S. This shifting climate could even bring some stormy conditions to Southern California.

Looking ahead to January, a transition to milder air seems on the horizon, which may ease heating demands in various eastern states.

At the same time, the Gulf Coast and Tennessee Valley might enjoy above-average warmth, raising the possibility of sporadic severe weather occurrences.

Snowfall Predictions Across Regions

As winter draws to a close, meteorologists caution against the potential resurgence of colder, wintry conditions in parts of the eastern U.S.—a sign that another significant shift could be on its way.

When it comes to snowfall forecasts, AccuWeather predicts above-average totals for several regions, including the Great Lakes, New England, Upper Midwest, Rockies, and Interior Northwest this winter.

Conversely, areas like the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, Appalachians, Ohio Valley, Midwest, and parts of the Southwest are likely to see below-average snowfall amounts.
